Moshe Feldenkrais, D.Sc., (1904-1984) creator of the Feldenkrais Method
of Somatic Education, was a physicist, engineer, Judo Master, educator and researcher.
In his search for ways to help himself overcome disabilities resulting from a
knee injury suffered in a soccer game, he made revolutionary discoveries about
the relationship between bodily movement and the ways we think, feel, sense and
learn. His work continues to influence such fields as performing arts, sports,
and physical therapy.
Some quotable quotes:
"Movement is life; without movement, life is unthinkable"
"What I am after is not just flexible bodies, but flexible minds."
"After just a few movements of the Feldenkrais exercises, people often
find themselves, as if by magic, easily doing things with their bodies that
they never thought possible."
"The Feldenkrais work is the most sophisticated and effective method I
have seen for the prevention and reversal of deterioration of function."
-Margaret Mead, Ph.D., Anthropologist
"The Feldenkrais Method is not just pushing muscles around, but really
changing things in the brain."
- Dr. Karl Pribram, Neuroscientist, Stanford University
"The system developed by Moshe Feldenkrais...has as much potential for
understanding the mind/body relationship as Einstein's general theory of
relativity had for physics."
- Bernard Lake, M.D., Australia
"The Feldenkrais Method [has] had remarkable success in...a wide range of
chronic complaints ranging from the debilitating, such as cerebral palsy
or paralysis, to the merely nagging, such as stiff necks, tension headaches
or the blahs."
"The Feldenkrais work has had an enormous effect on the way I run and on
the way I live my life. My knee problem vanished. I've increased my
mileage considerably without a trace of difficulty. I'm running faster.
"The exercises are ingenious and startling in their effectiveness. Moshe
Feldenkrais has found a way to free people to be more creative
intellectually and more flexible and flowing physically."
-William C. Schutz, Ph.D., Author of JOY
